One TEEN CLASS of 14 students wrapped up at Marlboro Grad Center July 19, 2017. High demand prompts SVDS to offer three 2018 classes–January 13-February 26, June 20-July 19, and July 23-August 22, again with no more than 14 students in each. New applications are now welcome and students can secure most drive times of their choosing by applying early.
Each student receives the state-mandated 30 hours of classroom instruction and 12 hours of in-vehicle learning (6 driving and 6 observing). Passing the class gets new drivers much of the way to Vt. junior operator’s licenses as early as their 16th birthdays. What remains for a license is logging 40 hours behind the wheel and passing the DMV road test a year (at least) after first obtaining a permit.
Prerequisites: 1) a valid Vermont learner’s permit, 2) at least 10 hours of driving with a licensed adult, AND 3) the ability to steer accurately and to maintain speed at or near the speed limit on a state road or highway.
Class requirements: 1) mandatory on-time attendance for all 15 two-hour classroom sessions and scheduled driving, and 2) driving regularly with a licensed parent or other adult to reinforce class lessons as they’re learned. This means students can shift gears smoothly if the family car has a manual transmission. Otherwise, no homework. Driver Ed must take priority over other activities, but only for about a month (a little longer in winter)! Students have some flexibility in choosing drive times (see application).
Cost: $750, with a sign-up deposit of $150 to secure a spot. The remainder is due after January 1, 2018 (see below for exact dates). All fees are refundable if the class hasn’t begun AND another student fills a vacated spot from the waiting list. With three classes in 2018 a waiting list (and thus a refund) may be less likely; please don’t enroll without deciding Driver Ed is a strong first choice.
WINTER 2018 Classroom dates/times (3 spots left): January 13, 14, 20, 21, 27, and 28; February 3, 4, 10, 11, 17, 18, 21, 22, and 23. Saturday classes and weekday classes meet 3-5pm; on Sunday mornings class runs 9-11am. Makeup classes as needed will be held February 24-26; students on February vacation will likely need to drive then to complete their in-vehicle requirement. Please specify your choice of drive times on the application, including right after school; they’ll work for SVDS if another student has the same availability. Final payment of $600 for the winter class is due January 1-7, 2018.
SUMMER 2018 SESSION I Classroom dates/times: June 20, 21, 22, 25, 26, and 27; July 2, 3, 5, 6, 9, 10, 11, 16, and 17. Class meets 9-11am each day. Nonclass days for driving: June 28 and July 12, 18, and 19. Please specify your choice of drive times on the application. A second deposit of $300 is due January 31, 2018, with final payment of $300 due May 1, 2018.
SUMMER 2018 SESSION II Classroom dates/times: July 23, 24, 25, 30, and 31; August 1, 6, 7, 8, 13, 14, 15, 20, 21, and 22. Class meets 9-11am each day. Nonclass days for driving: July 26 and August 2, 9, and 16. Please specify your choice of drive times on the application. A second deposit of $300 is due January 31, 2018, with final payment of $300 due June 1, 2018.
